I have passed by the lake district on many occasions traveling up to Scotland but had never had the time to visit the Lake District, so I took the opportunity to make amends for it this year and booked a place in the CBX calendar. For a week end away on the 24th July to see some of England green and pleasant land.
The midlands posse met up on the M1 and then traveled up to Knaresborough and meet up with Alan Fisher, Yorkshire group then all 10 of us set off to the lakes through Skipton, Settle, Kirkby-lonsdale and to Devils Bridge for a rest and a ice cream then on to the Lake District with a stop for 1 exhaust silencer falling off and us all getting lost around Kendal. Splitting up into 3 groups all going different ways. Alan went with the ferry over Windermere, Carl and Malcolm went with his old haunts of the area and I went the way my sat nav said but we all got to Coniston in the end safe and sound. Carl and Malcolm group got there 1st and Alan last as he just missed the ferry across Windermere just pulling away as they arrived to board the ferry.
Then went to the bar of the hotel for a drink then a roam around Coniston for food then back for chat with all the other bikers that had turn up, there were 12 bikes altogether.
Saturday morning the ride out started at 10.30 am with Greame and Gaynor Helsby and gyipsy the dog leading off with there side car unit and Dave Whelan marshaling the road junctions.
We went out south west on the A595 then north up to Egremont then on to Cockermouth to the B5289 the start of the Honister pass. Driving passed the Crummock water, Butter mere and Derwent Water winding our way though the valley. Then up to the the top. looking back down the valley for a breath taking view of the pass.
Then on to Keswick for a walk around the market town with a giant Cornish pastie and a walk down the hill to view the lake side of the Dewent water.
Then on past the highest pub in England then back down the struggles pass for a brake burning and gear crunching twisting ride down the pass. Half sliding down the seat, half on the seat and half on my fuel tank hanging on till we got to the bottom and in to Ambleside. There we stopped off to regroup at a welcome watering hole to have a chat and a shandy. Then back to the Hotel for a group meal and a good chat into the wee hours.
It was on a most remarkable summers day with blue sky and dry roads the most stunning countryside that I have been through on my CBX. Just a real pleasure to have been there on such a glorious day with such good company, unfortunately it was all over too soon.
